My video essay No More Beyond will be screened at The White Building in London at an event called Violent borders: mass deportations, migration and detention, organised by STRIKE! Magazine. The evening will also include films by STRIKE! Magazine and Standoff Films, and a panel discussion including people who have been forcibly deported, an immigration lawyer, a campaigner who physically blocked a mass deportation and members of groups challenging mass deportations and amplifying the voices of people in detention. The concert is part of the series Swimming With Music, a coproduction between UEL, Sound and Music and Bigga Fish.

I will be performing an electronic accompaniment to Gavin Higgins‘ new composition Tänze at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Tänze has been commissioned by immersive music educators London Music Masters and will be performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra with 70 London Music Masters students, conducted by Rebecca Miller. The performance is free, at 6pm before the main performance of the evening.

I am again delivering my annual lecture series A Sense of Place, concerned with relations between sound and environments, among other lectures and tutorials, at the BA Sound Art and Design at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London.

The continuously evolving online screening space The Unstitute has set up a new strand titled UNdiscriminate – a temporary, mobile encampment for nomadic ideas and political consciousness. Pattern & Noise is D-Fuse’s first solo exhibition in the US, and explores the different themes central to D-Fuse’s work: Small Global, on the 3rd floor, focuses on data visualisation in relation to environmental issues and global interdependency, while Tektōn, on the 2nd floor, references their roots in audio-visual culture, exploring the spatio-temporal qualities of light and motion. The exhibition will be held from 10 Jul – 9 Sep at Wood Street Galleries in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The opening night on 10 Jul also features performances of Tektōn and Latitude.

I have created the sound design for Zoë Svendsen and Simon Daw‘s interactive theatre project World Factory. Based on extensive research of the global textile industry, the project invites audience members to take on the role of a factory manager in Chinese garment production, compelling participants to confront the contradictions inherent in mass production and consumer capitalism. The new three-channel video essay No More Beyond will be shown at Counterpoints Arts‘ dis/placed exhibition at The Ditch, Shoreditch Town Hall, London, from 16 – 21 June. No More Beyond is a video essay about boundaries filmed in the city of Melilla, a Spanish enclave in northern Morocco, where 11.5 km of heavily patrolled triple wire fence separate EU territory from migrants trying to enter. The project takes its title from the city’s motto: Non Plus Ultra.

A Material Studies workshop will be held at Cafe Oto Project Space in London as part of the Art of Improvisers exhibition, curated by Blanca Regina and Steve Beresford, on 10 May from 11 am – 1 pm.

Tektōn will be performed at the opening night of the Störung Festival at La Farinera del Clot in Barcelona on 15 April. Other performers on the night are Asmus Tietchens and Lee Patterson.

The D-Fuse installation Topographies – Rio de Janeiro is being shown at the MOD Festival de Arte Digital at CAAV in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The audio-visual live performance Banquet, with Blanca Regina, will be staged in an updated version at the launch event of Gregorio Fontén‘s new poetry book FM at Bolívar Hall in London.

The D-Fuse video Report on Conscientious Objectors is being screened at the School of Advanced Study as part of the Being Human Festival. The video has been commissioned by Salt Road as part of the Hacking the Archives project. The video has been made from photographs and text documents from the UK’s Ministry of Information, which was active during World War II and which, among other things, gathered intelligence on conscientious objectors to the war.

The track Austerity Rockers has been released on the Psyché Tropes triple 180g vinyl compilation HFF Vol. 1, alongside work by Sculpture, Scanner, Spatial, Sally Golding, Tom White and Mark Peter Wright. D-Fuse have been invited by Greenpeace to exhibit the Small Global – Extreme Energy interactive installation at Glastonbury Festival this year. Small Global – Extreme Energy will be the main piece screened daily in Greenpeace’s CliMAX Dome ‘where seeing is believing,’ and around which Greenpeace volunteers will be at hand to give visitors more information on fracking and climate change. The piece will be shown Wed 25th – Sat 28th from 2-5pm.

On Sat 28th there will also be a special projection of Small Global – Extreme Energy and related D-Fuse works onto the outer side of the dome from 11:30pm – 1am.

A number of soundtracks for a series of Quayola installations have been released on double vinyl by NLS Records. The release also features work by Plaid, Mira Calix and Autobam. It can be purchased at Bleep and Boomkat.

The score for Dark Pool has been published by Composers Edition. Dark Pool is a vocal composition that flows across the terrains of neoliberal and libidinal economies. The piece has been commissioned by Sound and Music as part of the Portfolio programme. The score can be viewed and purchased here.

A newly reworked version of the audiovisual live performance Banquet, created with Blanca Regina, will be shown at A Night of Audiovisual Performance Art at The Horse Hospital in London. Banquet deals with different cultural and socioeconomic aspects of food. The evening has been curated by Maike Zimmermann and also features performances by Iris Garrelfs and Maike Zimmermann with Andrew Page.

The Naked City, a sound performance hewn together from field recordings from cities across the world, and inspired by Guy Debord’s eponymous collage and William Burroughs’ delirious depictions of the City of Interzone, will be part of A Night of Site-related Sounds presented by Sprawl and Strange Umbrellas at Troyganic in London. The evening also features performances by Murmer and Steve Beresford, Blanca Regina and Jack Goldstein.

Input/Output Gallery are screening video of the D-Fuse installation Topographies – Rio de Janeiro at The Factory, an event organised at IOW Warehouse in Hong Kong.

The new composition Dark Pool, for voice and swimming pool, will premiere as part of Wet Sounds at Ironmonger Row Baths in London on 2nd March. Dark Pool derives its name from the specialist language of financial markets, where a dark pool is a trading network in which deals are made without pre-trade price offers being visible to any participants. The piece has been commissioned by Sound and Music as part of the Portfolio programme.

The D-Fuse installation Small Global will be shown as part of People and Planet‘s Green Week at London College of Communication. Small Global is an immersive installation that combines data visualisations with high-resolution images and surround sound to address issues of global consumption and environmental degradation.

Anxious Xmas is an irreverent celebration of all things vexatious about the build-up to the most wonderful time of the year. Performances ranging from meditative to humorous to cathartic will provide a valve to release tensions, and a tonic to soothe stressed souls. Featuring a trio of Blanca Regina, Sharon Gal (vocals) and Steve Beresford (piano), Mundus Inversus, Gregor Riddell and Rob Lewis, The Conspirators of Pleasure, and The Material Studies Group.

The first ever Disruptive Technologies performance will take place at the Seeing Sound symposium at Bath Spa University, Bath, UK, premiering the new piece Feeding You. Feeding You creates a feedback loop in the image machine that operates on the body’s affective responses in order to increase the profit of capital. Its source material is the audio-visual language of branding and advertising of global corporations. Disruptive Technologies (DI$T€©) are Matthias Kispert (audio) and Max Hattler (video).

The new interactive D-Fuse installation Small Global – Extreme Energy will premiere at this year’s Bloomsbury Festival in London. The project investigates the destructive effects of unconventional fossil fuel extraction methods such as fracking or tar sands mining and has been developed in collaboration with academics from the Human Rights Consortium at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. Small Global – Extreme Energy has been supported by the Arts Council England and the School of Advanced Study.

My new video Voices in a Field, documentation from a public intervention two weeks earlier, is showing as part of the exhibition Recreation Ground at ATTIC, Nottingham, UK. The opening is on 18 Oct 6-9pm. Opening hours Thu – Sat 12-6pm.

Matthias will be presenting his work as part of the TRIBE SeaStation symposium at ARTos Foundation in Nicosia on 11th October. The evening will also feature an audio-only performance of the new work Feeding You.

Voices in a Field employs collective vocal performance to activate the urban wasteland site of The Island in Nottingham through sound. Participants congregate on the boundaries of the site and perform a text score, loosely inspired by Cornelius Cardew’s The Great Learning. The proceedings will be documented and later exhibited at Attic in Nottingham. Commissioned by Wasteland Twinning Nottingham.

My video The Funeral of Baroness Thatcher sees its first ever screening at London Seizure, a programme curated by Carmen Billows, at Bermondsey Project in London. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the artists.

D-Fuse‘s installation Small Global is showing at this year’s Digital Shoreditch Festival. An 11-day conference now in its second year, Digital Shoreditch brings together the various communities of people using technology for creative ends in East London. The Great Digital Exhibition will be free to attend and show over 20 works, some of them newly conceived and created for the festival. Many of the exhibits will contain interactive aspects, from digital elements like twitter hashtags, to reactions to body movement or sounds created by movement.

I will be improvising with Blanca Regina, Steve Beresford and Terry Day at the Ov London Art of the Moment Festival at The Albert in London NW6 5DT.

I will be performing an 1 1/2 hour live improvisation with Blanca Regina, John Oswald and Steve Beresford at the Sound Art Series at DAMAGED #27, 512 Bar, London, UK.

The Competition, a new video installation by Zoe Svendsen and Simon Daw, with dancers Sita Ostheimer and Chris Evans will be premiered at Shoreditch Town Hall in London on 25th January from 3-7pm. The installation explores the relationship between live action and remote interaction via the digital mediation of an invented sport, as well as the idea of choreography as tactics, and sport as aesthetic. Matthias Kispert has created a 10-channel sound installation to accompany the piece, made from close-up recordings of the performances that form the source material for this installation.

The Sound Development City Expedition Book 2012 has just been published. Sound Development City project, commissioned by Swiss cultural agency Sound Development was a series of residencies in Berlin, London and Zürich in the summer of 2012, during which 11 artists created new work individually and collaboratiely. The project featured a diverse range of practitioners from fields such as visual art, sound art, music, architecture and theatre, as well as workshops and presentations by artists including Sam Auinger, Mediengruppe Bitnik and Steve Goodman and Toby Heys.

Matthias Kispert is part of a Monotron orchestra featuring Steve Beresford, Poulomi Desai, Moshi Honen, Blanca Regina and Tasos Stamou, performing at Mopomoso‘s end of year celebration at Vortex Jazz Club in London.

D-Fuse are presenting the programme a/vant-garde, a series of live audiovisual performances at Kings Place in London this autumn. The third in the series features violinist, producer and film maker Zan Lyons‘s show Live A/V and Strings, as well as Quayola‘s Strata Live with music by Matthias Kispert, with cellist Gregor Riddell. The evening starts with a screening of an extract of the D-Fuse video performance for Steve Reich‘s Desert Music with the London Symphony Orchestra.

As a next instalment of work about everyday life, D-Fuse are working with researchers from the Bartlett School of Architecture and the University of Nottingham. Screens in the Wild is a project incorporating a series of architectural interfaces in East London and Nottingham neighbourhoods, which use broadcast media and interactive technologies to enhance real world connections, add value to the daily experience of the urban environment, foster community participation and ownership of the urban space. In a number of workshops D-Fuse are building a collection of photos and descriptions that show the area from the view of the people who live there.

D-Fuse have been invited to Rio de Janeiro by the Multiplicidade Festival and the British Council to perform our new live cinema piece Tektōn at Oi Futuro. The event also features an exhibition of the D-Fuse pieces Brief Encounters/By the Meter, Topographies: Rio de Janeiro (in progress), and Pathways: King’s Cross. In the days leading up to the exhibition, D-Fuse will collect new material for Brief Encounters/By the Meter and start working on Storylines: Rio de Janeiro.

I will be presenting a talk and performance about the sound of protest at the conference Inverted Worlds: Congress on Cultural Motion in the Arab Region at the Orient Institut Beirut, Lebanon, on 5th October. The presentation will be followed by a short performance of “Discontent”, a new audio piece made from recordings of protests collected during more than 10 years.

As for the past 7 years, I am delivering a 9-week lecture series titled A Sense of Place to BA Sound Art and Design students at London College of Communication/University of the Arts London. The module introduces students to concepts, working strategies, and artist work relating to sound and the environment.

Matthias Kispert is remixing the sound of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics live with Blanca Regina at Cul de Sac Gallery, London. The remix will be streamed live from the gallery website, so audiences can listen to the remix while watching the ceremony at home.

The new D-Fuse installation Re-Construct [Particle 3.0], which is currently in the process of being created specifically for Recombinant Media Labs’ CineChamber environment of 10-channel video and 8.2-channel audio, will be shown as part of the CineChamber installation at Cinema Excentris at Mutek Festival, Montreal, Canada.

My recording Anarchy in the UK, of a riot in London in 2001, has been released on Gruenrekorder‘s compilation Somewhere on the Edge, which marks the 100th release of the label. Consisting of 47 tracks with a total duration of over 531 minutes, Somewhere on the Edge is a collection of pieces on political, cultural, ecological or scientific themes and can be downloaded here.
