Topographies: Rio de Janeiro is currently in development. Continuing the processes begun in projects like Pathways: King’s Cross and Brief Encounters/By the Meter, D-Fuse are exploring Rio de Janeiro through the way it is imagined on celluloid and through stories collected in transit on street level. Its first iteration is concerned with the celluloid imaginary and consists of scenes from films shot in Rio de Janeiro that involve passage through the city. This edit is broken down into 200 small frames stretched across a larger canvas, creating a tapestry of cascading ripples as cuts flow across the screen, in a process inspired by works such as Eadweard Muybridge’s early photographic studies of motion or Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending A Staircase.
