Small Global is a multi-screened immersive environment that uses 3D animations of high resolution still photos and simple vector maps of the planet to explore issues of global consumption.

Small Global is an immersive installation that combines data visualisations with high-resolution images and surround sound to address issues of global consumption and environmental degradation. The piece currently consists of three modules. With the first two modules, #01-Deforestation and #02-Coltan, produced in 2005 at Eyebeam [NYC], the new Extreme Energy module takes a look at the increasingly desperate measures taken to extract more fossil fuels out of the earth’s crust.

Multiple transparent screens are arranged to create an invisible cube, revealing imagery on several layers diffracting onto the walls, ceiling and floor of the space. Members of the audience can walk around and inside the cube, their bodies becoming part of the projection surfaces. Surround sound immerses the space, and interaction sensors allow visitors to reveal visual information with their presence.

Module #03-Extreme Energy has been developed in collaboration with the School of Advanced Study, University of London, and supported by the Arts Council England.

Small Global signifies a global interdependence that often goes unnoticed in an environment saturated with marketing messages, which precisely these messages are designed to make us forget: The production of the goods we consume can have devastating consequences in parts of the world that we might not even be aware of.

Topographies: Rio de Janeiro is currently in development. Continuing the processes begun in projects like Pathways: King’s Cross and Brief Encounters/By the Meter, D-Fuse are exploring Rio de Janeiro through the way it is imagined on celluloid and through stories collected in transit on street level. Its first iteration is concerned with the celluloid imaginary and consists of scenes from films shot in Rio de Janeiro that involve passage through the city. This edit is broken down into 200 small frames stretched across a larger canvas, creating a tapestry of cascading ripples as cuts flow across the screen, in a process inspired by works such as Eadweard Muybridge’s early photographic studies of motion or Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending A Staircase.

Re-construct [Particle 3.0] is a reworking of one of the main strands of D-Fuse’s output from the last few years. Working in modes that range from the documentary to the abstract, projects like Latitude, Particle and Endless Cities are the outcome of extensive research into urban conditions in cities across the globe, where sound, video and photographic materials have been collected in collaboration with local artists.

Re-construct takes its cue from the live cinema performance piece Particle, which strips back the visual façades of the city to reveal an immaterial web of connections beneath. Recognisable urban landscapes disintegrate into abstract, data-like patterns, accompanied by surges of dense sound textures, layered harmonies, abstract rhythms and snippets of real-world sounds.

Using the three-dimensional space of the CineChamber, Re-construct follows a trajectory from abstraction to reconstruction analogous to the technique of particle synthesis, creating a narrative that plays out as much through immersive spatial experience as it does over time. Investigating an urban space that is at the same time real-and-imagined, the project merges layers of experience that range from the existential to the reflexive, from singular observations to abstract patterns and textures.
