Against my Better Judgement

This video is the result of a simple juxtaposition experiment; both sound and video are found footage. The visual part is an unedited excerpt from a video promoting a company specialising in product placement for film and other media. The original audio track has been replaced with extracts from a documentary in which a well known film director is commenting about his experience of shooting a film in the Amazonian jungle.

What interested me was the interplay between the fast-paced, adrenalised edit of the visuals and the measured, thoughtful delivery of the commentary. What is seen is an overload of signifiers, consumable goods and consumable lifestyles, while the voice comments on an entirely different kind of excess.

On the surface the piece appears as a direct critique of consumer culture and marketing, yet at times even the commentary conveys acute ambiguity about the subject matter. The question of how much it is possible to expose a system of one which is part remains unanswered.
